Having achieved the important milestone of Open Defecation Free (ODF) India, the Government has taken a step forward in form of SBM (G) Phase II to improve the levels of cleanliness in rural areas through Solid and Liquid Waste Management. To accelerate the sanitation movement under Swachh Bharat Mission, the Government of West Bengal has set up 'Mission Nirmal Bangla’ to reinforce the need to sustain ODF status and renewed the pledge for Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus.

As a result of the efforts taken under the mission, Solid Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) activities are gearing up. 142 villages have been declared as ‘Aspiring ODF plus’ villages, 4 villages are ‘Rising’ and 17 are ‘Model’ villages. 49 villages have arrangements for Solid Waste Management (SWM) and Liquid Waste Management (LWM), 17,472 villages are with minimal litter and 13,422 villages are with no plastic dump in public places.
