Job Description

State Consultant- WASH, International Development Agency, Hyderabad, Telangana

1. POSITION VACANT: State Consultant- WASH, International Development Agency, Hyderabad, Telangana

Our client is a respected, International Development Agency (IDA), that works across the globe to promote children's survival, protection and development.

IDA’s aim is to meet the global commitment to fulfilling every child’s right to water, sanitation and hygiene, as it is an ongoing challenge at policy, administrative and community levels. As on today, 30 districts in Telangana have been declared as Open Defecation Free based on 96.4% toilet coverage. The state has planned to achieve the ODF status (100% HH toilet coverage) by December 2018. As per ASER 2016, 75% schools are covered with toilets and 73.3% schools with drinking water. Similarly as per RSOC 2014, 24.8% anganwadis are covered with toilets, 30.5% anganwadis with drinking water. However, there is large variation what is reported and what is available, access and functional. Thus many schools and anganwadi centre’s are not access to safe WASH facilities and services.

The state has made substantial progress in terms of coverage of villages with drinking water with piped water schemes even in areas with predominantly scheduled caste and tribal group population. As per NSSO 2016, around 41% of population in Telangana has access to safely managed drinking water (located on premises, available when needed and free of contamination). Around 3700 habitation are affected with fluoride and 529 habitations with salinity. The state is yet to mainstream water safety planning in the guidelines. Further the Rural Drinking Water Department has limited skills and knowledge on water safety planning and implementation. Institutions and other service providers have limited capacities for building disaster-resilient safe water systems. The state is providing safe drinking water to more than 70% HHs through tap connections under Mission Bhagiratha. The remaining HHs are expected to be covered by March 2020. Several measures are being undertaken to reduce contamination of water from source to fetching point.
