1. POSITION VACANT: Lead - Quantitative Researcher, Young Lives India, New Delhi


Young Lives India
is a leading think tank based in New Delhi, specialising in research, policy, evaluation and intervention, relating to children, adolescents and youth.

Young Lives started-off as a longitudinal, mixed method, research study on childhood poverty, coordinated by the University of Oxford in 2001, following 12,000 children over 20 years, in four developing countries viz. Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam. The study has gained a global reputation and enormous respect for its rigour and impact.  

In India, the longitudinal study has followed 3,000 children since 2001 and collected data across various thematic areas to generate policy related evidence. The thematic areas include nutrition, health, education, household poverty, migration, transitions to labour market and life-skills.

Young Lives India is the “go to” organization for those seeking rigorous evidence in India, with emphasis on policy makers. The organisation provides policy makers with research findings that provide insights into implementation challenges, as well as gaps in current policy formulation. Young Lives India works in collaboration with the Government of India, State Governments, National and State Commissions and UN agencies, apart from national and international, multilateral and bilateral agencies.

Reporting to Executive Director, Young Lives India, the Lead - Quantitative Researcher shall be responsible for the following:

Key Job Responsibilities:

(1) Design of survey questionnaires, running pilot exercises, refining study design and survey instruments and conducting data analysis for tool validation;
(2) Analysis of data using appropriate econometric and statistical models and techniques, to address specific research questions;

(3) Taking the lead for developing proposals relating to studies, design surveys and data collection activities;
(4) Setting-up data quality checks and quality assurance for quantitative data collection;
(5) Managing on-going research projects, providing support to the project teams and other field staff, to ensure that projects adhere to protocols, procedures, and timelines;
(6) Traveling to project locations to work with the project teams and provide direct oversight, to maintain quality assurance of field work;
(7) Overseeing the project budget and ensuring the financial health of projects;
(8) Writing summary reports, maintaining clear documentation of survey process (including STATA do files);
(9) Communicating with and managing the research team;
(10) Carrying out literature reviews and synthesis of research;
(11) Writing analytical reports/ working papers/ journal papers, etc.;
(12) Performing other duties, as required, in alignment with her/his role.



(1) Applicants must have a Ph.D. From a reputed institution in a quantitative social science discipline (viz. education/ economics/ statistics/ demography/ development studies).


(1) Minimum 12 years of professional experience in a quantitative research position, with excellent analytical and econometric skills;
(2) Proficiency in STATA and ability to analyze panel and large data sets;
(3) Experience in developing and conducting surveys and evaluations;
(4) Experience in developing and refining data collection tools;
(5) Experience with data management and oversight;
(6) Experience of writing at least four peer-reviewed journals.
Essential Skills and Competencies:
(1) Sound knowledge of statistics, econometrics and research methodology;
(2) Excellent writing skills and ability to produce reports;

(3) Experience of editing research outputs in English with minimal supervision;
(4) Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills;

(5) Experience of working in multidisciplinary national teams;
(6) Good personal organisational skills with experience of managing a varied and heavy workload;

(7) Proven ability to handle several different projects/ tasks at one time, successfully completing tasks assigned and meeting deadlines;
(8) Ability to travel extensively.


Gross compensation for the position is attractive. Please note that the offer made to the selected candidate shall be commensurate with qualifications, experience and salary history.
