State Adolescent Health Consultant

1. POSITION VACANT: State Adolescent Health Consultant (SAHC), International Development Agency, Guwahati, Assam

Our client is a respected, International Development Agency (IDA), that works across the globe to promote children's survival, protection and development.

Government of India has identified development partners for each state across the country who are committed to providing technical assistance to the state government to implement RMNCH+A strategy now focusing on the aspirational districts. The IDA is a lead partner under RMNCH+A initiative for Assam. In addition, the scope of the RMNCH+A strategy encompasses cross-sectoral convergence, notably with Nutrition, WASH, C4D and Advocacy/Communications for equity planning, implementation, and monitoring. To accelerate the achievement of RMNCH+A indicators it is essential to focus on each stage of the life cycle.

Adolescence is a very critical period in the life cycle and interventions at this stage will have long-lasting results on the overall health outcomes of mothers and children. Although adolescence is a healthy phase, more than 33% of the disease burden and almost 60% of premature deaths among adults can be associated with behaviours or conditions that begin or occur during adolescence like tobacco and alcohol use, poor eating habits, sexual abuse and risky sex (WHO 2002). Within the age group of 10 to 19 years, the profile of disease burden is significantly different for younger and older adolescents. While injuries and communicable diseases are prominent causes of disability and death in the 10 to 14 age group, outcomes of sexual behaviours and mental health become significant for the 15 to 19 years age group. Moreover, the anaemia statuses among adolescents are very high in Assam. As per NFHS-IV, around 47% of adolescent girls are anaemic. This percentage is much higher in the tea garden areas where the maternal mortality ratio is also higher than the other parts. This percentage among boys is also high. The priorities under adolescent health include teenage pregnancies, adolescent anaemia along with nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, addressing gender-based violence, non-communicable diseases and substance use.
